In honor of Valentines Day coming up I’ve decided to share with you all a few reasons why you NEED to read this AMAZING book. I’ve raved about this book to basically everyone I know, maybe even strangers (oops). Aziz Ansari is my favorite comedian! This man can always make me laugh, I think…actually I know that I’ve watched all of his stand up comedy videos, most of which are on Netflix (cough, cough..check them out)
Anyways lets get right into my five reasons.
1. He Discusses The Frustrations of Texting
Everyone can relate to the frustrations of texting someone new, unless you’re like Ryan Gosling or something and you simply have to exist in order to get a text back. Aziz starts off the book explaining one of his encounters with texting someone new. “I’m so stupid!” he writes. “I should have typed ‘Hey’ with two y’s, not just one!” Then later: “Did Tanya’s phone fall into a river/trash compactor/volcano? Did Tanya fall into a river/trash compactor/volcano?? Oh no, Tanya has died.” (But nope, Tanya just didn’t feel like answering him). He also talks about the certain rules of texting. “Don’t text back right away. You come off like a loser who has nothing going on” and my favorite one “The person who receives the last message in a convo WINS!”
2. It’s Full Of Actual Data
As Aziz said, “I also knew that I, bozo comedian Aziz Ansari, probably couldn’t tackle this topic on my own.” Therefore he enlisted Eric Klinenberg, a sociology professor at New York University. Together, they set up a serious research program. It included focus groups and interviews with hundreds of people in different places (listed in number 3). They also interviewed experts, and consulted a lot of sociology, psychology and human behavior books. In result, Aziz spits some facts to you and then makes a joke right after (or vice versa).
3. He Traveled to Gain More Info
Aziz didn’t just research one city or one country. He traveled to other countries to get the romantic scoop. He conducted research in New York; Los Angeles; Wichita, Kan.; Monroe, N.Y.; Tokyo; Paris; and Doha, Qatar. All of these places each have such a different dating/romance scene. It’s crazy to think how dating in Kansas completely differs from dating in New York City.
4. He Even Talks About Settling Down
Aziz explains research on how back in the day people would get married early and now people are getting married WAY later in their lives. He also hit on the topic of the fear of commitment in this modern age.
5. It’s FUNNY
I didn’t want to put this as the first reason because it’s like DUH Jojo you just told us how funny he is why would you put it as the number one reason. Regardless, this book WILL make you laugh. I’ve learned so much from this book and it is so RELATABLE!! Aziz also gives some advice that really resonated with me. You guys have to pick it up and give it a chance.
I originally had 10 reasons why you should all read this book but I had to trim it. If you aren’t truly convinced if you should read it, message me for more reasons. If you have read this book let me know your thoughts and lets chat about it!
